The department exists primarily for the care of the peri-operative patient and it is our advocacy to empower our patients so that they may understand and properly appreciate the conduct of the procedures they are about to undergo. In so doing, it is our hope that with the knowledge, they may feel confident of the safety of present-day anesthesia.
What is Anesthesia?
Anesthesia is a loosely-applied term that frequently pertains to the means of rendering a patient capable of undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures. Anesthesia requires some degree of hypnosis and/or anxiolysis, analgesia, block of unwanted reflexes, some degree of muscle relaxation and some degree of amnesia.
