Welcome to the Official Website of the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital, unquestionably the biggest anesthesiology residency training program in the country. Through this website, the department hopes to reach its three (3) main constituencies: our patients, our alumni, and the medical community. Furthermore, the department will strive to send out its mantra, vigilance, the constant need to keep continual watch on the ever-changing and dynamic needs of the peri-operative patient, and empathy, the desire to thoroughly comprehend the human side of the specialty; thereby bringing to fore the science and the art of anesthesia.
ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PERIPHERAL NERVE BLOCKS WORKSHOP
The UP-PGH Department of Anesthesiology recently held an Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Nerve Blocks Workshop last 13-14 November 2009 at the Operating Room Complex, 3rd floor Central Block Building, Philippine General Hospital.
Day 1 (Friday, November 13) consisted of didactic sessions at the Anesthesia Conference room while Day 2 (Saturday, November 14) that included wet clinics at the Operating Rooms.

UP-PGH ANESTHESIOLOGY BAGS FIRST PLACE IN NATIONAL QUIZ BEE
The UP-PGH Department of Anesthesiology placed first on the recently concluded final rounds of the Tagisan ng Talino Quiz Contest: Itaktak Mo, Utak Mo! held at the Lung Center of the Philippines Auditorium last November 16, 2009.
The team, composed of Drs Karen Michelle G Aquino, Anna Margarita F Hilvano, Monace Zephyr S Sandalo, Chris Bryan V Sembrana, Karl Matthew C Sy Su and Karel Ann A Espejo, initially qualified in the elimination rounds held last June 13, 2009 at the Natrapharm conference room. Dr Cornelio A De La Paz served as the team’s adviser.

DACS now in full implementation!
The Department's computerized census system is now in full implementation. After a successful soft launching of the system several months ago, the Department of Anesthesia Census System (DACS) was well-received by the Resident Staff. Initially implemented in the section of Obstetric Anesthesia, DACS then went live in the Section of Pediatric Anesthesia before eventually achieving full effect department-wide. Launched this afternoon 28 October 2009 at the weekly Departmental Conference, DACS is now officially live. Developed using MySQL and PHP scripting, the system is the brainchild of Dr BJ Jao. Presently, resident physicians may now input their census data onto several computer terminals in the department library, as well as other terminals in the operating room complex, or through their own laptops in several wi-fi hotspots within the Operating Room Complex or the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.
